NewsFactor – Apple launched iTunes 10 with Ping, a new music-oriented social network, on Wednesday. Within hours, the site fell victim to spammers looking to make a quick buck from Apple’s unsuspecting 160 million music lovers exploring the new way to discover what music their friends are listening to.

Reuters – Google Inc is in talks with music labels on plans for a download store and a digital song locker that would allow its mobile users to play songs wherever they are as it steps up its rivalry with Apple Inc., according to people familiar with the matter.

Privacy in iTunes Ping (PC World)

PC World – Ping is Apple’s music-centric social network that is integrated into iTunes 10. From a privacy standpoint, it’s pretty straightforward–as opposed to Facebook’s multitude of privacy settings–but then again, Ping is also very limited as to what services it offers.

If you haven’t heard the news from yesterday’s Apple music conference, here’s a quick recap: All but the iPod Classic feature new designs. The iPod shuffle gets its buttons back , the sixth-generation iPod Nano loses the iconic click wheel but now has a touch screen, and the new iPod Touch receives a super sharp display, a front-facing camera for making video calls, and HD video recording, and a ton of new internal features. Apple days at the CNET office can be physical and mentally draining, so now’s the perfect time to welcome professional Paul Ramsay back into the studio! The three of us are obviously ingrained in tech, but we’re learning from Wilson’s e-mail addiction that it’s necessary to take a healthy break from the computer, work, Facebook, iPhone, or whatever gadget is commanding your life.

Ping on iTunes – Not So Hot (PC World)

PC World – Apple’s big overhaul of iTunes, announced Wednesday, turns the media management software into a fledgling social network thanks to a newly introduced feature called Ping. I would have expected more from Apple with this first attempt at building a community around iTunes. It’s not all bad, but if Ping doesn’t improve soon this music-oriented social network will bomb faster than an American Idol wannabe.
